Try this first

  • Clear your browser cache and try logging in again
  • Confirm your EFIN is active
  • Double-check your onboarding form was submitted and approved
  • Use the correct login link for your software - see Resourceful links below

Known limitations (not bugs)

  • State e-file acceptance can lag a day or two behind federal - this is normal processing time, not an error on your end
  • Refund status won't appear in the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool until the return is fully processed - this can take longer during peak weeks
  • Bank product deposit timing follows your provider's schedule (Refund Advantage / TPG / Republic), not ours - contact them directly for exact timing
  • Our Team: replace this list with your specific set of common non-bug questions as they come up this season

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a qualifying child and a qualifying relative? +
A qualifying child must pass all five tests: relationship, age (under 19, or under 24 if a full-time student, or any age if permanently and totally disabled), residency (lived with the taxpayer more than half the year), support (didn't provide more than half of their own support), and joint return. A qualifying relative instead must pass four tests: not a qualifying child of anyone, member of household or relationship, gross income under $5,300 (2026), and the taxpayer provided more than half their support. A qualifying child generally unlocks more tax benefits than a qualifying relative.
Two clients want to claim the same child — how do we determine who can? +
Only one taxpayer can claim a given child; the IRS will reject an e-file with a dependent already claimed elsewhere. Apply the tiebreaker rules in order: if only one person is the child's parent, the parent wins. If both are parents filing separately, the one the child lived with longer wins; if time is equal, it's whoever has the higher AGI. If no parent can claim the child, the person with the highest AGI wins.
When can a married client still file as Head of Household? +
Only if they meet all four "considered unmarried" tests: they file a separate return from their spouse, paid more than half the cost of keeping up the home, their spouse did not live in the home at any time during the last 6 months of the year, and the home was the main home of their child, stepchild, or foster child for more than half the year (and they can claim that child as a dependent). If any of these fail, the client must file as MFJ or MFS.

Accessing your cloud-based tax software

Your software is cloud-based, so you can access it from home or anywhere you have an internet connection — no installation required. Depending on your program, you'll work in TaxSlayer, OLT, or Crosslink for both personal and business returns. Software access is included in every training program, so there's nothing extra to buy just to get started.

PTIN and EFIN basics

You do not need prior experience, a degree, a CPA, or an EA to enroll. You will need a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number), and we walk you through exactly how to obtain one. You do not need an EFIN to get started — you can prepare returns under our system while you're learning. When you're ready to open your own office, we'll help you obtain your own EFIN.

Dream Builders Network & ongoing support

Dream Builders Network is our private community, where members get coaching, networking, live Q&A, accountability, and business support. On top of that, our team provides technical support, compliance support, and tax question support throughout tax season and beyond — qualified students also get access to bank products like refund transfers and refund advances.
